Winter Auditions

The winter festival includes the following ensembles: MS Concert Band, HS Chorus, and HS Jazz Band. All students will need to be registered using the 2020 Winter Registration Form. For more information about the winter audition process, scroll down and look for each ensembles' requirements.

All winter audition fees, which is $5 per student, will need to be mailed to the treasurer no later than Monday, December 7, 2020 for all students. Late registrations/payments will incur a $25 fine. All checks should be made out to "CVMFA District VI".

Winter Audition Location

The 2020 winter auditions will be held at Bellows Falls Middle School. Soon after filling out the registration form, the audition host will coordinate all of the audition times and will send them out.

MS Concert Band

  • 6th graders are welcome to audition.

  • WIND PLAYER Auditions are comprised of the following:

    • Prepared piece- to see which piece is in the rotation for 2020, click here.

    • Major scales and chromatic scales- see MS Concert Band Scales

  • PERCUSSIONIST Auditions are comprised of the following:

    • Specialty instrument performance: Snare Drum, Timpani, or Mallets

      • Prepared piece- to see which piece is in the rotation for 2020, click here.

      • Technique specific to that instrument (requirements for each instrument can be found here.)

    • Auxiliary percussion instruments

Given that players of each specialty instrument can earn acceptable scores, the top scoring player of each will be the first selected for the ensembles. The remainder of the positions will be filled by the highest scoring players regardless of specialty instrument.


HS Chorus

  • Auditions consist of performing a prepared piece that can be found here.

  • The piece will first be sung in 4 parts, unaccompanied.

  • Adjudicators will fill in for missing parts. All adjudicators must be able to sing their part. All students will be auditioned as a full quartet.

  • The piece can be transposed up or down a while step, if desired.

Results (or an update in the event of delay) will be emailed to teachers by the ensemble manager within one week of the audition date.


HS Jazz Band

  • Audition guidelines for all Winds, Piano, Guitar, and Bass

    • Student perform their part on the prepared piece- to see which piece is in the rotation for 2020, click here.

      • Play 1st part wherever multiple parts are presented.

        • Brass players can choose to audition on the 2nd part if they prefer, by doing so, they will not be eligible for 1st chair.

    • Preform a sight-reading excerpt from a big-band chart.

    • Students perform improvisation using current piece from the rotation list of blues pieces.

      • The judge will play a recording of the Aebersold play-along to accompany each student.

    • Procedure:

      • Winds-

        • Play the head

        • Outline the scales/chords using the selected piece which can be found here.

        • Improvise melodically for one chorus

        • Return to the head (judge will stop player once the head is restarted)

      • Piano/Guitar-

        • Play the head

        • Comp chords for one chorus as if accompanying a soloist

        • Improvise melodically for one chorus

        • Return to the head (judge will stop player once the head is restarted)

      • Bass-

        • Play the head

        • For one chorus, play a bass line appropriate to the style and chords as if accompanying a soloist

        • Improvise melodically for one chorus

        • Return to the head (judge will stop player once the head is restarted)

      • Drummers-

        • Perform the required piece from Sittin' in With the Big Band Volume 2. (Directors only need to purchase the drum set book and its accompanying CD, currently listed as $14.95)

          • The play-along recording that does not include drums will be used in the audition.

          • The piece will be played all the way through with the recording.

        • Perform stylistically appropriate time-keeping patterns and fills in the following styles:

          • Funk

          • Shuffle swing

          • Jazz waltz

        • Perform a sight-reading excerpt from a big-band chart.
